Jeffrey Gibson (Mississippi Band Choctaw, Cherokee, b. 1972)
Natura Non Facit Saltum, 2005
Oil paint and pigmented silicone on wood; 57 x 46 x 2 1/2 in. Denver Art Museum: William Sr. and Dorothy Harmsen Collection at the Denver Art Museum, by exchange. © Jeffrey Gibson
In this painting the artist confronts the native experience of land loss, not through bitterness and despair but by envisioning a primordial Eden with sheer veils of paint. He adds depth to the surface by piping on flowers and vines at the top as a direct reference to the beaded Iroquois pieces sold to tourists at Niagara Falls.
